President's Message
At age 84 on 13 February 1944, Henrietta Szold died at the Rothschild
Hadassah University Hospital. Her funeral was attended by some of
the tens of thousands of Youth Aliyah children whose lives she had
touched, as well as countless others whose lives she changed and
re-charged.
Sadly, she did not see the end of World War II; more sadly, she did not
see the creation of the State of Israel or witness the pain and joy of
its birth. But, she laid a rock-solid foundation for us; for the
future of the organization; for education in the infant state; and a
health plan, which would be prepared to meet the post war needs
of Palestine’s people and an “anticipated flood of war
refugees.”
More important the actions, which her dreams demanded, continued
despite enormous responsibilities toppling over one another.
Hadassah, in 1945, at war’s end with the American Friends of
Hebrew University began a $4 million fundraising campaign to build the
Hebrew University – Hadassah School of Medicine.
Hadassah made success happen; Hadassah 100 years from its beginning makes success happen.
Jan Smolin

Why do we support Hadassah and HMO?
Tali’s Story
It happened so fast. One day Tali was a normal, healthy four-year
old, jumping, running, giggling. The next day, she told her ima
she felt dizzy. A few days later, she was so dizzy she could no
longer walk, and so nauseous she couldn’t eat. The
frightening diagnosis: a medulloblastoma, a malignant tumor at the back
of her brain.
Treatment for this kind of tumor is risky; it can harm the healthy
brain tissue surrounding the tumor. Hadassah specialists used
low-dose radiotherapy, combined with chemotherapy, to destroy the
cancer. They cured her without harming the healthy tissue.
Three years later, Tali is growing normally – without cognitive
impairment – and completely free of disease.

Perpetual Yahrzeit in Israel
Who will say Kaddish for me?
Hadassah has made it possible for you to have Kaddish
recited for your loved ones under the magnificent Marc Chagall stained
glass windows of the Fannie and Maxwell Abbell Synagogue at
Hadassah’s Medical Center in Ein Kerem, Jerusalem.
A meaningful certificate will be sent to the donor as well as annual notices to confirm the Hebrew Yahrzeit date.
Your $1,000 donation supports the work of the Hadassah
Medical Organization in healing, teaching and research, thus
transforming loss into life-affirming mitzvoth. Your tribute of
Tzedakah in memory of your loved one follows the custom of our
Heritage.
- The $1,000 donation necessary to establish a Yahrzeit is tax-deductible.
- The donation can now be made by credit card
either in full or over an extended period of time: 10 monthly
payments or quarterly payment of $250.
Keepers of the Gate
Hadassah’s life sustaining work is enriched every year by
membership and donors. Keepers of the Gate is Hadassah’s
first and only National annual gift campaign. In the seedling years,
Hadassah Keepers levied their funds to focus on gene therapy and breast
cancer research. In 2006 there are over 4,000 Keepers nation-wide
who choose to support a wide array of Hadassah projects from stem cell
research to Beit Ar El at Young Judaea, from the Hadassah College of
Jerusalem to Youth Aliyah villages. Keepers of the Gate are
encouraged to designate their annual gift to any other approved
Hadassah project of your choice.
YOU KNOW THAT YOU’RE A KEEPER WHEN:
o You have made a special promise of $1,000 annually to Hadassah.
o You receive and wear a stunning silver and gold “David’s Harp” pin.
o After five years of giving, your name is engraved
on the Keepers of the Gate wall which is located prominently at the
Hadassah hospital campus at Ein Kerem.
o Your name is listed in the annual Keeping in Touch publication, which is distributed nationally.
o You are invited to the annual cocktail recognition
reception event at National Convention as well as local and regional
major donor events for donors of $1,000 and above.
Your annual giving opportunity can be made with a check, credit card, stock transfer or an Israel Bond. Monthly credit card deductions make giving simpler. If you begin in June (the start of the Hadassah fiscal year) your payments are only $83.33 per month.
Chai Society
One Dollar a Day is all you need to save to have the $360.00
donation to become a Chai Society member. You will then receive a
beautiful onyx pin that you can proudly wear knowing your donation
helps to further the important work of Hadassah and to continue the
Hadassah legacy for the future.
Won't you join the Sabra members who have already made their commitment
Maya Shmonim
A great way to make Donor is to join MAYA SHMONIM. For your $180.00
annual pledge, you will receive a beautiful Sterling Silver Pin
specially created by Judit Leiser. The funds raised will benefit
the expansion of the Mother and Child Center at the Hadassah Hospital
in Israel. This expansion will provide Pediatric Oncology and High Risk
Maternity Care Departments with badly needed space. With our
help, Hadassah will enlarge the facility which enables parents to stay
with their children as we provide them with treatment for leukemia,
brain tumors and lymphoma.
Bonnie Karfeld has the forms to join. Call at 602-569-0700 or e-mail skarfeld@aol.com
Don't forget our ongoing Sabra projects. Each member may donate her time, money or items as she chooses.

each of their lives. Caring friends like you are very important
to Dysart Community Center".
